It is a common belief that washing the turkey will kill the bacteria that can cause food poisoning. The bacteria could spread to your kitchen if you clean the turkey. Every person should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds after handling turkeys. The only way to eliminate bacteria in turkey is to cook it at the correct internal temperature.
2. Don’t make a mistake: Thaw the turkey on the counter
To make sure your turkey’s safety, don’t let it freeze on the counter. The perfect environment for bacteria growth in a room temperature environment can cause serious illness for you and your guests.

You can defrost turkeys in a bowl of water, instead of the refrigerator. But, it is important to change the water each 30 minutes. The CDC recommends this to ensure the turkey remains in a safe environment and to prevent harmful bacteria from forming.
4. Don’t keep the turkey in the fridge for more than two hours
This is among the most serious turkey mistakes you must be aware of this Thanksgiving. The two-hour mark is when the CDC declares you’ve crossed the line of safety. If you leave your turkey out on the counter or in your car for more than two hours, it’s better to be secure and purchase the turkey replaced.
5. Don’t make a mistake: If you’re not able to cook the turkey in the shortest time do not buy a new one.
You must ensure that the date you purchase fresh turkeys at your local butcher shop, meat distributor or grocer coincides with the plans for your Thanksgiving dinner. If the turkey was purchased fresh, you’ll need to cook it right away. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service states that fresh turkeys must be stored in the refrigerator for no more than two days.
